Halophyte Plants and Their Residues as Feedstock for Biogas Production—Chances and Challenges

چکیده

The importance of green technologies is steadily growing. Salt-tolerant plants have been proposed as energy crops for cultivation on saline lands. Halophytes such Salicornia europaea, Tripolium pannonicum, Crithmum maritimum and Chenopodium quinoa, among many other species, can be cultivated in lands, coastal areas or treating wastewater, the biomass might used biogas production an integrated process biorefining. However, halophytes different salt tolerance mechanisms, including compartmentalization vacuole, leading to increase sodium plant tissues. content may adverse effect anaerobic digestion process, which needs adjustments achieve stable efficient conversion into biogas. This review gives overview specificities that accounted using their feedstocks order expand renewable production. First, physiological mechanisms grow under conditions are described, lead characteristic composition halophyte biomass, influence Next, possible avoid negative effects with full-scale applications. Taking all these aspects account, a great potential methane yields similar those produced by simultaneous benefit utilization soils.

Evaluation of Mediterranean Agricultural Residues as a Potential Feedstock for the Production of Biogas via Anaerobic Fermentation

Hydrothermal, dilute acid, and steam explosion pretreatment methods, were evaluated for their efficiency to improve the methane production yield of three Mediterranean agricultural lignocellulosic residues such as olive tree pruning, grapevine pruning, and almond shells. Hydrothermal and dilute acid pretreatments provided low to moderate increase in the digestibility of the biomass samples, whe...

Anaerobic Degradation of Halophyte Biomass for Biogas Production

Anaerobic degradation of wild halophytes (Kalidium caspicum, Salicornia europaea and Climacoptera lanata) from solonchaks of Kyzylkum desert in comparison with conventional glycophyte Panicum coloratum was studied. Lab-scale reactors were fed with dried and milled plant biomass. Tests were operated under batch and continuous mode at mesophilic (M) and thermophilic (T) temperatures. High concent...

Detailed monitoring of two biogas plants and mechanical solid-liquid separation of fermentation residues.

The Austrian "green electricity act" (Okostromgesetz) has led to an increase in biogas power plant size and consequently to an increased use of biomass. A biogas power plant with a generating capacity of 500 kW(el) consumes up to 38,000 kg of biomass per day. 260 ha of cropland is required to produce this mass. The high water content of biomass necessitates a high transport volume for energy cr...
